(KGTV) - Eight Americans are among 12 people who died after the tour bus they were riding in crashed on a roadway in Mexico.

ABC News, citing a Mexican official, reported two Swedes, a Canadian and a Mexican also died in the Tuesday morning crash.

At least 14 people were injured in the wreck, the official said.

The tour bus was reportedly on its way to visit Mayan ruins when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle overturned on a road in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Royal Caribbean officials confirmed 27 of the bus riders were passengers from two Royal Caribbean cruise ships -- the Serenade of the Seas and the Celebrity Equinox.

The U.S. State Department said it is monitoring the situation and had staff at the scene to help.

ABC News reported that the bus driver was detained, but no other details were provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
