ENCINITAS -- Two men were behind bars for allegedly stealing recently delivered packages from outside an Encinitas home Monday, then leading deputies on a very brief slow-speed chase.
Someone called the sheriff's department shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday to report seeing two men who may have been involved in the theft of UPS deliveries in the 900 block of Urania Avenue, near Leucadia Boulevard, according to a sheriff's department statement.
Arriving deputies attempted to stop the suspects -- identified as 32-year-old Nicolas Voge and 30-year-old Drew Martin, both of Encinitas -- as they were driving away in a silver sedan, sheriff's officials said.
The suspects' stopped at the nearby intersection of Leucadia Boulevard and Piraeus Street and attempted to run off. They were taken into custody a short time later, and the stolen property was recovered, according to the sheriff's department statement.
Voge and Martin were arrested and subsequently booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of petty theft and conspiracy. Voge also faces drug-related charges, and Martin for evading, possession of burglary tools and possession of brass knuckles, according to the sheriff's department and jail records.
