Two fires in the East County caused traffic on a major highway and caused commuting problems Tuesday.

South of State Route 125 and Bancroft, three small fires in a quarter-mile stretch broke out on the right side of the highway.

No homes or structures were threatened by the fire. Heartland firefighters were on scene working to put out the flames.

Traffic on northbound SR-125 was backed up for miles.

A second fire broke out in Lemon Grove on southbound Lemon Grove Avenue at Mt. Vernon. Flames were near the trolley tracks, so MTS stopped service to that area and brought in a bus bridge to transport passengers.

Heartland firefighters were on scene attempting to put out the flames.
