A woman and a man from the Los Angeles County suburb of Huntington Park were killed in a collision on Interstate 15 near Escondido, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday.

The woman was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office as Ofelia Amezquita. The driver of the 2008 Ford F150 pickup truck the woman was a passenger in was also killed, but his name was not released.

Both were 71 years old.

The collision occurred about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on the northbound side of Interstate 15, just north of the Gopher Canyon Road exit, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.

The pickup truck was in the No. 1 lane when the driver drifted into the No. 2 lane, sideswiping a 2015 Honda Civic, Bettancourt said.

The pickup truck driver lost control of the vehicle, which struck the center divider, then shot to the right across all lanes of traffic and down a 200-foot embankment, according to Bettancourt.

The driver and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, Bettancourt said.

The 18-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was uninjured.

It was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the collision.
