CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A person who spent time at Harborside Elementary and Castle Park Middle School -- both in Chula Vista -- during the spring and summer is being treated for tuberculosis and may have exposed others, county health officials reported Monday.
The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency is working with the Chula Vista Elementary School District and the Sweetwater Union High School District to notify individuals who might have been exposed.
The period of potential exposure at Harborside Elementary School, 681 Naples St., was between March 15 and June 6.
At Castle Park Middle School, 160 Quintard St., the possible exposure was from July 20 to Aug. 10.
Free testing for students at both schools will take place Wednesday on campus.
"Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county public health officer. "Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease, but when it does occur, it can be treated and cured with medication -- that's why it's important to identify those who have been exposed."
So far this year, 132 cases of tuberculosis have been reported in San Diego County, according to the HHSA. There were 234 cases reported last year.
