SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was picking up trash along train tracks in Old Town was killed by a passing Amtrak train Friday morning.

The accident happened at 6 a.m. in an industrial area near Noell and Hancock streets, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies said.

The northbound train was going about 45 miles an hour when an engineer saw the woman on the tracks. Although the train went into emergency braking and sounded its whistle, the woman did not move.

The train struck the woman and suffered life-threatening injuries. Paramedics took her to UCSD Medical Center where she died.

Deputies did not release the woman’s identity but said she was 59 years old. They asked anyone with information to call 858-565-5200.
