CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater school district is scrambling to fix a reported $30 million mistake, forcing the board to make up for it by revising the budget for the current school year.
San Diego County’s second largest district released a statement, saying they found a shortfall in their budge from last year.
According to a report by The Voice of San Diego, the shortfall is more than $30 million, mostly from staff raises unaccounted for.
Bankia Claybon has two children in the district. “That's gonna set back kids, that's going to set back teachers, it's gonna jumble up the schooling to where there’s not going to be order,” she said.
The district has faced years of scrutiny, battling lawsuits for bribery and sexual harassment scandals.
District officials revealed the budget in a meeting Monday, citing other expenses from staff raises, including costs of substitute teachers and an unexpected $1 million expense for utilities.
District officials are set to submit a revised budget to the county’s Office of Education on October 8.
