SAN DIEGO – A man had to be rescued by firefighters after he smashed his SUV through a guardrail and went down an embankment into Murphy Canyon early Thursday morning in the Serra Mesa neighborhood.

At around 3:30 a.m. a driver drove his SUV through a guardrail at a dead end in the 2400 block of Murphy Canyon Road and down into a drainage culvert, where his vehicle got stuck.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews had to repel down to reach the man, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said. He was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa with minor injuries.

A tow truck was on scene as firefighters tried to determine the best way to extract the crashed SUV.

The driver will likely face charges once he is released from the hospital.
