LAKESIDE, Calif. – A woman escaped a house fire that broke out early Monday morning in Lakeside, and then later reignited.

The blaze started sometime before 3:30 a.m. in kitchen and made its way up into the attic of a home on Lemon Crest Drive near Winter Gardens Boulevard, according to a Lakeside Fire District (LFD) battalion chief. A woman who resides in the home was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and was able to make it out safely with her dog.

Crews with LFD and the Santee Fire Department responded and knocked down the fire within about 15 minutes. However, sometime before 5 a.m., the fire flared up again in the roof area. Firefighters had to climb up on to the roof with chainsaws and rip apart the interior in order to find and extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A financial estimate of the damage was not immediately known. The Red Cross was assisting the resident with temporary housing.
