San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer:

“Last night we lost one of San Diego’s finest. We grieve for our fallen officer and stand with his family during this very difficult time. We also pray for the second officer shot last night as he recovers from surgery. Violence against the men and women who wear the badge is violence against us all. I ask all San Diegans and all people across our nation to join together in support of our officers who courageously protect our communities. We need them and they need us.”

Chula Vista police:

"Our hearts are heavy after the tragic loss of one of San Diego PD's finest. We’re praying for the speedy recovery of a second SDPD officer injured during last night's horrific shooting. Our condolences go out to San Diego Police Officers, and to their families and loved ones. The entire law enforcement community stands with you this morning in solidarity."

California's Attorney General Kamala Harris:

"My deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of Officer Jonathan “J.D.” DeGuzman, who lost his life in the line of duty last night.  Officer DeGuzman served his community with bravery and heroism, making the ultimate sacrifice. His service will never be forgotten by the people of California.  As we remember Officer DeGuzman, we also hold the men and women of the entire San Diego Police Department in our thoughts and prayers, especially Officer Wade Irwin, who was gravely injured last night."

Attorney General Loretta Lynch:

"We have had sadly another tragic shooting that occured in San Diego just last night. This shooting has claimed the life of one San Diego police officer and left another seriously wounded. Agents from the FBI and ATF are on the scene assisting local law enforcement with their investigation and the DOJ will make any and all resources available to our partners as this inquiry continues. This is still very new, active and ongoing. We are still working to make sure we have all of the details as to what happened. Let me take this opportunity to express my condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of this slain officer. And also offer my prayers that this wounded officer will make a swift and full recovery."
