CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A South Bay family is homeless Thursday morning after an overnight fire partially destroyed their home.

The blaze was reported just before midnight on Wednesday at the home located at 590 Douglas Street, behind the Canyon Plaza Shopping Center.

Police said that one of the residents awoke to the smell of smoke last night. That person gathered the rest of their family sleeping inside and all of them were able to evacuate safely.

Firefighters responded to the fire within minutes and were able to put out the flames keeping the fire from spreading to the rest of the home.

The family and their pets have been displaced and it's unknown when they will be allowed to return home.  The Red Cross was called out to help the family with a place to stay tonight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
