VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Deputies are investigating an early morning shooting at a Vista apartment complex that damaged vehicles, shattered windows and prompted a search for two suspected shooters.
Deputies responded to reports of shots fired just before 2 a.m. at the Pepperwood Vista Apartments in the 2100 block of University Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies found an upstairs unit "peppered with multiple handgun rounds" and several vehicles in a nearby parking lot struck by bullets. Deputies recovered several shell casings but could not locate the firearms used in the incident.
Deputies said an argument might have prompted an unidentified person to fire shots into an apartment unit. In response, a black woman -- who witnesses said had two children with her -- came out of an apartment and fired several shots, hitting vehicles in the parking lot.
Witnesses said the woman and the two children did not appear to be injured and left the scene.
Deputies are still searching for the woman and the other person who opened fire.
10News learned one person who drove into the apartment complex at the time of the gunfire was shot at but not injured.
