SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego Police Department sergeant is under investigation after being accused of attacking his girlfriend in the Gaslamp Quarter over the weekend, sources told 10News.

Sgt. Oscar Armenta, who is with the department's Criminal Intelligence Unit, is suspected of beating his girlfriend at 7th and Island avenues. He was off-duty at the time, 10News learned.

Sources told 10News several bystanders and witnesses -- including another off-duty police officer -- saw the incident, and some got involved in an effort to stop Armenta from attacking the woman.

Armenta was arrested and later posted bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week.

As of noon, SDPD officials have not commented on the sergeant's arrest.
