SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was fatally shot by her estranged husband, who then turned the gun on himself inside a Grantville home Sunday night, police said.

The murder-suicide was reported shortly after 10 p.m. at a home in the 4800 block of Elsa Road, according to San Diego police.

Police said 36-year-old Marguerite Elliot was in a bedroom in the back of the home when her 39-year-old husband James Elliot went to the house unannounced, shot her and then shot himself in the living room.

Both "sustained single gunshot wounds to their heads" and were declared dead at the scene, according to police.

Police said the couple lived in Santee, but Marguerite Elliot had been staying at the house -- which belonged to her sister -- due to ongoing marital problems with her husband.

10News learned other family members, including young children, were inside the house at the time of the shooting but they were not injured.
