SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Angel Osuna and Loris Speltini are married but they'll be living apart starting Wednesday, now that immigration officials have returned Speltini to his native Italy.

The couple recently spent the day in Tijuana and were returning to San Diego when they were stopped at the border.  Speltini was questioned, searched, and detained by the Customs and Border Patrol Office of Field Operations, according to Mark Endicott of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Osuna is a U.S. citizen and student at UC San Diego.  He told 10News Speltini was working in the U.S. but his visa was invalid.

Osuna has not seen Speltini since the detainment and went to Lindbergh Field Wednesday, hoping to say goodbye.  Osuna was too late; Speltini was put on an earlier flight.

Speltini will not be allowed to return to the U.S. for three years, according to Osuna.

Money is also keeping the couple apart.  Angel is a low-income student and was living in married student housing.
