SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council Monday honored several local heroes who jumped into action during the Las Vegas massacre last month.

At Monday's event, declared "Las Vegas Unsung Heroes Recognition Day," councilmembers honored a Marine veteran as well as several police officers for their efforts in the Oct. 1 tragedy. They all say their training kicked in and prepared them for what they needed to do that day.

While many ran from the hail of gunfire, Marine Taylor Winston and police Officers Max Verduzco and Tom McGrath went back to save lives.

Their training was put to the test that night. Verduzco held down a fence to get people out, McGrath shepherded dozens of people to safety and Winston drove dozens to the hospital.
