The USS Dewey returned to Naval Base San Diego Monday. The troops faced a challenging deployment.
On April 26, The Dewey safely recovered the crew of an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter that crashed in the water off Guam. The helicopter was part of Maritime Strike Squadron 78. There were no apparent injuries to the two pilots and one aircrewman.
On May 6, sailors passed by a disputed South China Sea island.
The US cited freedom of navigation in its move through the South China Sea but China called it 'trespassing'.

Seven sailors died on the USS Fitzgerald, including two from San Diego County.
