SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The remains of Chula Vista native Carlos Ganzan Sibayan, who died on the USS Fitzgerald, are being flown home from Japan Wednesday.
Fire Controlman 2nd Class Sibayan was among the seven American sailors who died June 17 when the U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a container ship from the Philippines off Japan.
Most of the victims were sleeping when their compartment flooded on the Fitzgerald. The ship made it back to port under its own power.
Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Douglass also died in the collision.
Sibayan's remains will arrive on a commercial aircraft Wednesday night at Lindbergh Field. According to the Navy, his family will meet the plane.
