SAN DIEGO - An armed man suspected of burglarizing a Clairemont home and fleeing the scene, prompting a precautionary lockdown at a nearby school, was captured by police over an hour later.

At about 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a burglary report on Baxter Street, near Lehrer Drive. When police arrived, officers spotted a man carrying a handgun running away from the scene.

Police said the man ran into a canyon near state Route 52 and Interstate 805, and a police helicopter was summoned to search the canyon from the air.

Shortly before 5 p.m., officers apprehended the man in the canyon without incident.

During the search, the Creative Performing and Media Arts School on Conrad Avenue was placed on a precautionary lockdown. The lockdown was lifted a short time later.
