Photos released of Gaslamp brawl that left man paralyzed

SAN DIEGO -- Surveillance photos showing several people who used their phones to record a fight in the Gaslamp District that left a man paralyzed were made public Tuesday in hopes that they would come forward to assist police in their investigation.

The 29-year-old victim was severely injured as he and a friend attempted to break up a fight between several other people near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Market Street around 2 a.m. on Aug. 27.

Some of the brawlers knocked the victim to the ground, then hit and kicked him in his head, according to San Diego police.

Investigators reviewing surveillance video from area businesses saw that several witnesses to the fight used their cell phones to apparently take photos or record video. However, none had turned over the evidence to police.

Authorities stressed that the witnesses being sought were not considered suspects in the attack, and urged them or anyone else who saw the fight and has not already provided a statement to contact them at 619-744-9534.
