One hospitalized after deputy-involved shooting on northbound State route 125

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person was hospitalized following a reported shooting State route 125 at Navajo Road. The shooting was reported just after 7 p.m. on the northbound side of Sr-125 near Grossmont College Drive.

One person was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, according to Heartland Fire and Rescue. Around 9:15 p.m. the San Diego Sheriff's Department said no deputies were hurt.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) spoke with media Friday night, confirming that the incident was a deputy-involved shooting. 

According to the department, the incident started as a welfare check on a potentially suicidal man just before 7 p.m. Deputies found the man's car on the right shoulder of SR-125 and approached.

It's not clear what happened after finding the man's car, but deputies said the man was uncooperative. The man reportedly exited his vehicle with what appeared to be a handgun, SDSO said.

A confrontation ensued, and that's when a deputy opened fire and shot the man. He man was taken to the hospital, injured, but alive. There is no word yet on his condition. 

According to Caltrans, all northbound lanes of SR-125 near Navajo Road were shut down due to the investigation. Lanes were reopened just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
