SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man was killed Tuesday in a single-car rollover crash on Interstate 8 near Alpine, authorities said.
The crash involving a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero happened around 6:45 a.m. on eastbound I-8, west of the Dunbar Lane exit, according to California Highway Patrol.
The Montero was traveling on the No. 1 lane when the driver "allowed the vehicle to drift to the right as the roadway began to curve to the left" before it entered the No. 2 lane. The car then went down an embankment and hit a large boulder, sending the vehicle into the air and ejecting the unrestrained driver.
The victim, believed to be in his 50s, landed in a dirt area just off the eastbound lanes, but CHP officials said the Montero "landed on top of him pinning him under the vehicle."
The man was declared dead at the scene, the CHP said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
