OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- Oceanside police have closed off a section of a popular shopping center Friday morning after officers shot and killed a man who aimed a gun at them.

The shooting happened around 12:15 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of a shopping center located on the 3400 block of Marron Road, near the Kohl's department store.

Officers tried to make contact with the man when he pulled out a knife and threatened them.

The officers used bean bag shots and a K-9 unit to subdue the suspect but he refused to cooperate, police said.

The suspect then pulled out what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward the officers.

Police said that several shots were fired, but it's unclear if the suspect discharged his weapon.

Oceanside Police are withholding the man's name until his family is notified of his death.
