OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 77-year-old man whose body was found in an Oceanside home Tuesday morning.

Oceanside police said officers responded to a report just before 7 a.m. of a body found inside a home in the 500 block of North Tremont Street.

According to police, the John Roth was discovered dead by his wife when she returned home from work. Roth's 41-year-old wife told police that she noticed the garage door was open when she got home and when she found her husband he was not breathing.

Police said the victim “sustained trauma to his upper body,” but no other information was immediately released. There is no word on whether anything was stolen from the home.

Heartbroken friends gathered Tuesday at Surfside Tap Room Tuesday. Manager Sam Scherff says Roth was a regular, and she saw him just two days ago.

"He was a beloed guy," Scherff said. "People really liked him so it's really sad."

Scherff mentioned that Roth had a walking routine, "so if someone had seen him walking they might have seen him as an easy target."

Oceanside police’s Crimes of Violence Unit is investigating the incident.
