OCEANSIDE -- Oceanside police are seeking a white Ford vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run crash that left a man in critical condition near Guajome County Park in Oceanside Thursday night.

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer spotted the victim lying as if he was sleeping in the bike lane of westbound state Route 76 near North Santa Fe Avenue around 10:20 p.m., Oceanside police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez said. It was unclear when the crash occurred and the officer said no vehicles were seen in the area.

The severely injured man was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated. Lopez said he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators determined the man had been the victim of a hit-and-run crash and some type of white Ford vehicle may have been involved, Lopez said.

The investigation prompted authorities to temporarily close the westbound lanes between North Santa Fe and College avenues, according to Caltrans.

Police asked anyone with information on the crash or the events leading up to it or who was in the area at the time to call an accident investigator at 760-435-4801.
