For the first time, family members of Jamie Powell are speaking out as the civil trial about the death of the young Navy sailor approaches.
In March 2014, Powell, an electrician aboard the USS Russell, was headed back to this ship after lunch when witnesses say he started to lose control on Harbor drive near potholes. Powell was thrown off of his motorcycle and struck by a car. He did not survive the crash.
The family is now suing the City of San Diego for wrongful death, alleging the response to dozens of complaints about the road was not good enough.
The family's lawyer Rebecca Morrison says trial is scheduled for May 1.
