A 24-year-old Navy sailor was killed in a predawn single vehicle crash on Interstate 5 just south of downtown Sunday.

According to the Medical Examiner's Office, a motorist spotted a crashed sedan and damaged guardrail on the northbound freeway near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway at about 3:15 a.m., and called 911, the medical examiner said in a statement.

Paramedics were sent to the crash, at the foot of the Coronado Bridge, confirmed that the driver was dead and called the California Highway Patrol to investigate.

The CHP had no further information on the crash and the victim's identity was not immediately released.
