(KGTV) - At least 17 people, including children, were injured in a multi-car crash on Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass in California on Wednesday.

The crash was reported at 10:42 a.m. PT on southbound I-15 at Highway 138 near Phelan, between Hesperia and San Bernardino.

More than 20 cars were involved, according to the California Highway Patrol. All southbound lanes of the freeway shut down for hours due to the massive scene.

Although the initial report of injuries reached more than 20 patients, many of them declined treatment, San Bernardino County Fire said. There was no word on the condition of the victims.

The exact cause of the crash was unknown but visibility was very low due to heavy fog, San Bernardino County Fire reported.

The area near the crash is popular with travelers who stop at gas stations, a McDonald's and a Best Western hotel.
