NATIONAL CITY (KGTV) - A father was taken to the hospital early Friday morning after being shot during an attempted home invasion robbery in National City.
The shooting happened at around 2 a.m. Friday inside the family's residence, located at the intersection of Sweetwater Road and Calmoor Street.
According to National City police, the victim woke up after hearing loud banging noises coming from the first floor of his home. He then went downstairs to investigate and found two young men trying to get into his home.
The victim chased the pair out of his home to the driveway, where he was struck in the abdomen by gunfire.
Responding police officers located two males matching the description of the suspects outside of the Westfield Plaza Bonita shopping mall, a few blocks from the shooting. Both males, one believed to be a minor, were detained as persons of interest.
The victim was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital to undergo surgery. Police say he is in stable condition.
The victim's wife and children were inside the home at the time of the shooting but were not physically harmed. His wife, who is pregnant with the couple's third child, celebrated a baby shower at the home last weekend.
While National City police did not release the name of the victim, neighbors told 10News they know "Adrian" well.
Through a public records check, 10News learned the home is owned by 32-year-old Adrian Preciado. Preciado's Facebook page says he's a graduate of Castle Rock High School.
Police say they do not know whether the attempted break-in was random or whether Preciado's house was targeted.
Surveillance video recorded by across-the-street neighbor George Ferguson shows two males in hooded sweatshirts walking up the driveway. Several minutes later, the video shows the father chasing the intruders off his property. As they reach the corner of his driveway, one of the intruders appears to turn and point a gun at the father. An injured figure is seen returning to the front of the house where he collapses.
