CARLSBAD, Calif. - A motorcyclist was killed on a Carlsbad-area freeway Friday after being struck by a woman allegedly under the influence.
The fatal crash occurred about 3:45 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5, just south of Poinsettia Lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said the 27-year-old woman driving a 2012 Hyundai was traveling on the freeway when she struck the motorcyclist as she was changing lanes. According to CHP officials, the motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, was splitting lanes.
The victim was ejected from his motorcycle and tumbled into foliage on the right-hand side of the roadway. The CHP reported that the man's helmet "popped off and he came to rest on the right shoulder of I-5."
The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene.
The woman was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
