A motorcyclist died in the Mission Bay area of San Diego in a multivehicle crash, police said Friday.

The incident was reported at 8:20 p.m. Friday in the 2400 block of West Mission Bay Drive, just north of Interstate 8, according to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims.

The motorcycle rider, a man whose age was not available, had been riding south on West Mission Bay Drive when he drove next to a Lamborghini and began revving his engine, Heims said.

At that point, the motorcyclist lost control and began accelerating at high speeds, sideswiping a Geo Prism and rear ending a 2016 Ford Explorer, Heims said.

The rider was subsequently thrown from his motorcycle and struck a center median upon impact, Heims said.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

An investigation by the SDPD Traffic Division is underway, Heims said.
