A man whose body was found on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley during the morning rush hour on Aug. 19 had been strangled, the Medical Examiner's Office disclosed Saturday.

The unidentified 30-to-40-year-old white man had been seen walking near the westbound side of the 8 Freeway near the Interstate 15 interchange at about 6:30 a.m., the medical examiner's office reported.

Officers responding to a 911 call arrived to find the man, with trauma of unknown origin to the back of his head, SDPD Lt. Ray Valentin said. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Authorities closed the three right-hand westbound lanes of the freeway around the site of the fatality while investigators gathered evidence, causing a Sig Alert and a massive traffic snarl.

Detectives were looking into a reported sighting of a white BMW sedan parked near the victim with a man standing next to it at about the time the body was spotted, according to Valentin. It was unclear if that person was
related to the fatality, the lieutenant said.
