CHULA VISTA -- A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle early Wednesday at a Chula Vista intersection.

The victim was struck by a southbound van while crossing Fourth Avenue at E Street shortly after midnight, according to a Chula Vista police statement.

Authorities said the pedestrian was in the crosswalk, but it was not immediately clear whether he or the motorist had the right of way at the time. Police said the collision was so strong it sent the victim flying about 20 feet in the air before he hit the ground.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. His name was not immediately released.

Police said the uninjured driver remained at the scene after the crash and was not suspected of being under the influence.

Police have not released the suspect’s name. Investigators are hoping to find surveillance video in the area that will allow them to determine who had the right of way.
