LA MESA (CNS) - A La Mesa resident was under investigation today, but not in custody, after he shot a man in the head outside his home in a quiet upper-middle class neighborhood near the foot of Mt. Helix, police said.
The victim survived the single bullet to his head but was taken to a hospital Sunday evening in ``very, very serious condition,'' La Mesa police Lt. Chad Bell told reporters at the scene.
Several 911 callers reported the shooting about 4:45 p.m. Sunday in the 4400 block of Glen Street, an idyllic residential road lined with two-story homes boasting well-manicured lawns and backyard pools. The street, west of state Route 125 and the foot of Mt. Helix, runs just a few hundred yards between Alpine Avenue and Mariposa Street.
When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his head, Bell said. The victim was taken to a hospital and listed in serious condition as of Sunday night.
Officers detained the resident of a nearby home ``who they believed shot the man,'' Bell said.
The shooter and victim were not related but were acquainted, the lieutenant said. It wasn't immediately clear what circumstances led up to the violence.
``We're really not sure at this point, we know that the shooter and the victim know each other, but we don't have any idea at this point why the shooting took place,'' Bell said.
The shooter was questioned by La Mesa police detectives but was not in custody as of Sunday night as police continued to investigate, Bell said.
