SAN DIEGO – Police say a man driving a Maserati posed as an Uber driver and then sexually assaulted a passenger in the University Town Center area Tuesday night.

According to San Diego police, sometime before 10:30 p.m., a Maserati approached a couple at the Westfield UTC mall who were waiting for a ride and asked them if they had called for an Uber. They said yes and reportedly got into his car without checking for a sticker or credentials.

As they started heading home, police said, the driver reached over and grabbed the male passenger inappropriately. The victim slapped the driver’s hand away and jumped out of the car as soon as it came to a stop at their apartment complex in the 9400 block of Gold Coast Drive in Mira Mesa.

The couple called 911 and officers responded and apprehended the driver. Police told 10News the driver smelled of alcohol and was arrested on charges of sexual battery. His name was not immediately disclosed.
