ESCONDIDO -- A "person of interest" in the shooting death of a man outside an Escondido apartment complex earlier this week was behind bars after he was picked up in the same location on an unrelated warrant, authorities said.

The man -- identified in news reports as 36-year-old Marco Carapia -- was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Daybreak Grove Apartments on East Washington Avenue near South Ash Street, Escondido police Sgt. Ed Bennett said.

Carapia was "believed to be connected" to the fatal shooting of an unidentified man at the complex Monday night, according to the sergeant.

Officers sent to the complex late Monday to investigate reports of gunshots heard found a mortally wounded victim lying near a driveway, Escondido police Lt. Ed Varso said. He later died in a hospital.

Varso said investigators were unsure of the events that preceded the fatal shooting.
