SAN DIEGO -- A man died in an accidental fire at a two-story apartment complex in Golden Hill Friday morning.

The blaze was reported at 4:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of B Street. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded and found smoke coming from a second-floor apartment and a man inside.

Crews performed CPR on the victim as he was transported by ambulance to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, SDFR spokesperson Lee Swanson said. There were no reports of any other injuries.

It took 35 firefighters about 15 minutes to knock down the fire. The damage, estimated at $125,000, was contained to the apartment where the fire broke out and an adjoining unit.

SDFR investigators determined the fire was likely caused by someone smoking, Swanson said.

The building is a large house that was converted into five apartments. The Red Cross was also called out to assist about 10 residents with temporary housing. San Diego Gas & Electric was also called out.

The victim was not immediately identified.
