NATIONAL CITY -- A pedestrian was struck by a car on a National City roadway overnight Wednesday and later died in a hospital, authorities said.

The victim and another man were wandering in and out of lanes in the 1600 block of Sweetwater Road near Prospect Street at around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a car, according to National City police. He flew about 20 feet through the air after being hit.

Police report the driver who struck the victim, along a second driver, stopped at the scene and administered first aid to the victim. The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, where he died. His name was not immediately available.

Police believe the victim was a transient. Both he and the other man had just gotten food from a taco shop across the street before he was hit. The other man was not hurt.

The investigation is ongoing. The driver is not expected to face charges.
