Authorities asked the public Friday for help in determining what led to the apparent bludgeoning death of a young man in the Gaslamp District last weekend.

The 20-year-old victim died in a hospital Thursday, five days after he was found gravely injured in downtown San Diego, according to police.

Physicians told investigators the man, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, seemingly had suffered blunt-force wounds, Sgt. Manny Del Toro said. An official cause-of-death ruling is on hold pending autopsy results.

Detectives believe the victim may have sustained the fatal injuries during a fight that occurred early Saturday at a business in the 400 block of E Street, the sergeant said.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
