A 46-year-old man has died after lifeguards pulled him from the water in Ocean Beach Saturday.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. after lifeguards closed the beach.
Two men were swimming near the pier. One man made it back to shore, but the other struggled, according to lifeguards.
Witnesses called 911 and lifeguards who were still in the vicinity got there quickly.
Lifeguards said the man was underwater when they got to him. They started to give him CPR before they had him out of the water.
The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"Do not swim in areas not protected by lifeguards," lifeguard Andy Lerum said. "Lifeguards had closed to the beach for the day right at 6 o'clock and this incident happened after that."
The man was identified as Cesar Ughetto from La Mesa.
