KEARNY MESA, Calif. -- Police struggled to take down a man who was allegedly wandering a Kearny Mesa parking lot with knives early Tuesday morning.

At around midnight, San Diego police responded to a report of a man with two kitchen knives walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 7400 block of Armstrong Place, across from Mesa College. He was also screaming.

"He starts screaming, ‘Help, call an ambulance, I need help,’” a woman who lives at the complex told 10News. “I'm like, ‘have you been injured, have you been stabbed?’ And he starts walking at me really fast.”

When officers arrived on scene, the man reportedly dropped the knives and officers wrestled him to the ground and tied him to a stretcher. They had to place a mesh bag over his head to keep him from spitting.

In addition to the two knives he was holding, officers found a third knife in the complex. No one was hurt.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for a mental evaluation. No charges have yet been filed.
