ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI after traveling the wrong way on Interstate 15 in Escondido and slamming head-on into a semi-truck.

The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. Monday on the southbound side of I-15 near Lilac Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials said a pickup truck was going north in the southbound lanes when it crashed into a semi-truck. The semi’s driver said he swerved just enough that the maneuver may have saved the pickup driver’s life.

Emergency responders treated the pickup truck’s driver at the scene, and CHP officers then arrested him on suspicion of DUI.

The semi-truck driver was not injured, but the crash caused about 20 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.

Lanes were closed temporarily to clear the crash scene and clean up the fuel spill.
