SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Rancho Bernardo family is outraged after they said someone walked through the front door of their home while holding what was later determined to be a toy gun.
In an incident captured on their Ring doorbell camera over the weekend, the Whitten family said a teenage boy opened their screen door and walked in while holding a fake gun in his hand.
Sommer Whitten said the boy entered the house at around 7 p.m. -- just moments after her husband returned home from dropping off their daughter. Whitten said they normally lock the door, but her husband forgot this time.
According to Whitten, the boy told her husband he was hiding from friends and playing a game.
When the teen left, the Whittens called San Diego police.
However, the family said police initially told them there was nothing they could do.
“That’s what they said -- ‘No, he didn’t point it at anybody, he also didn’t threaten anyone,’ but I felt coming in our home was threatening enough. It wasn’t enough for the police to come out,” Whitten said.
The Whittens said the police have contacted them again and told them they are looking into the situation.
