SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California and the Internal Revenue Service is extending the state tax filing and payment due dates to Oct. 16 for Californians impacted by this winter's storms, which includes San Diego County.
In February, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that those impacted by winter storms could claim a deduction for disaster loss, and extended filing and payment deadlines for individuals and businesses in California.
"As communities across the state continue recovering from the damage caused by the winter storms, California is working swiftly to help recovering Californians get back on their feet," Newsom said. "The state is aligning with the Biden Administration and extending the tax filing deadline in addition to the tax relief announced earlier this year."
Many Californians had their homes and belongings devastated by these storms and by the flooding, landslides, mudslides and evacuations they caused.
The tax relief applies to nearly all of the state's 58 counties, including San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange counties. Imperial County is not included.
The relief applies to deadlines falling on or after Jan. 8, 2023, and before Oct. 16, 2023, including the 2022 individual income tax returns that would have been due on April 18 and the quarterly estimated tax payments that would have been due on Jan. 17 and April 18, 2023.
However, if taxpayers have already finished filing their latest tax return, and needs to safely dispose of old tax files the City of San Diego has resources. City residents can take advantage of the annual free Tax File Recycling event.
Starting Wednesday, April 19, residents can drop off documents in secured bins at the Miramar Recycling Center, where they will be shredded and recycled.
The center is located at 5165 Convoy Street and open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Residents are limited to one banker’s box of files per day. A banker’s box is approximately 10 inches high, 15 inches wide and 25 inches deep.
This free service is for City of San Diego residents only. Business owners can find recycling services by going to WasteFreeSD.org.
