SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspected drunken driver was arrested after San Diego police said he rammed into a police cruiser while trying to get away from an officer in the Mission Beach area.

At around 10 p.m. Wednesday, an officer pulled over a car at Ventura Place and Strandway for a possible DUI. The car stopped, but when the officer tried to make contact with the driver, he backed the car into the patrol vehicle and then sped away.

As the car fled, it hit a truck and then a parked vehicle in an alley before the police cruiser pulled up behind it.

However, witnesses said the driver hit the other vehicles repeatedly in an attempt to get away. The driver then got out of the car and tried to run.

Police quickly caught the man and took him into custody.

Police are trying to determine if the driver was responsible for a hit-and-run crash that occurred earlier in the evening in the same area.
