CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Numerous South Bay teachers are slated to rally Wednesday morning against the Sweetwater Union High School District’s proposal to layoff instructors and staff members as part of a plan to balance its budget.

10News learned that a group of teachers will march at 7 a.m. at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista to protest the district’s decision to make cuts.

The teachers’ march comes one day after students at several district high schools and middle schools walked out to protest Sweetwater’s plan.

In late February, the district’s school board voted in favor of laying off nearly 240 teachers and staff members by May, as well as closing learning centers, in order to rectify the district’s budget issues.

District officials say Sweetwater’s $30 million budget shortfall is due to a decline in student enrollment and decline in overall revenue, and not financial mismanagement.
