NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - National City and San Diego County is opening a new COVID-19 vaccination site.

It is located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on 140 E. 14th Street in National City.

"You want something people are familiar with, access to location, mass transit," National City Mayor Sotelo-Solis said, "so for us, the MLK center is that space."

Vaccines were administered at the location Thursday, in what Sotelo-Solis described as a "soft open." She says it officially opens Sunday.

"We're very excited to have potentially 500 vaccines every day provided to our community," Sotelo-Solis said.

The county says the location will be open from Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is one of the so-called "pod" locations which can administer hundreds of vaccinations a day.

The county has opened two vaccination super stations that can administer thousands daily -- one is near Petco Park and another in Chula Vista.

By Feb. 1, the county plans to open two more super stations in East and North County and have a total of 16 pod vaccination sites.
