NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - An apartment building fire at the Chateau Gardens in National City displaced two dozen people on New Year’s Day.

The started around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2400 block of 8th Street.

National City firefighters say their chief happened to be driving by the area when he saw the flames and called it in.

“It’s an electrical fire starting in the electrical box,” Joel Tabao, the owner of Chateau Gardens, said.

The fire damage was limited to the exterior of the building. However, firefighters say none of the apartments in the building are livable. The fire knocked out the power, and several of the units have smoke damage.

There were 16 units in the building, 14 were occupied.

The Red Cross is helping the people displaced in the incident.
