SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An elderly man died Monday morning after police said he was struck by a car on a Mira Mesa street.
According to San Diego police, the fatal collision occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the 9100 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard, near Black Mountain Road.
Police told 10News the 87-year-old pedestrian stepped off the center median and into the roadway when he was hit by an Acura traveling westbound.
The driver rushed out of his car to help the pedestrian, but the elderly man died at the scene.
The Acura's 21-year-old driver told 10News he was on his way to work when the crash happened. He said it was dark and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing at the time.
The driver said he feels horrible about what happened. He was questioned by police, and it was determined that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
Police shut down westbound Mira Mesa Blvd., between the 9100 and 9200 blocks, for several hours due to the investigation.
The victim and the driver were not identified.
