SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two men were rescued after the boat they were in crashed into a cave in the waters off Point Loma.

At around 1 a.m. Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call from two boaters who said their 26-foot catamaran became stuck inside a cave located near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The boaters said they set the vessel on autopilot and went to sleep, but when they woke up, they found themselves inside the cave with no way out.

With a Coast Guard helicopter and a San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter hovering above the scene, San Diego Lifeguards swam into the cave and helped the two men out of the cave.

The men were evaluated at a Lifeguards station and it was determined that both were not seriously hurt.

The boat was still inside the cave as of 4:30 a.m.
